Sunday Morning Conversation on ESPN
Reporter: Coming into these games, there was a bit of a cloud hanging over you. There were allegations made. Did it put you in a good frame of mind to compete in these Olympics for gold medals?
Apolo: Yeah, definitely. I mean, because allegations, you know, straight up. So um...nothing I could do about that except for just, you know, just try to keep focus, and just, you know, keep pushing, and keep my eye on the games.
Reporter: You said when you first arrived here, all it did was take away a couple of days of training.
Apolo: Exactly
Reporter: Did those two days of lost training hurt you in the competitions here?
Apolo: I don't think so. You know, I got a silver and a gold, and I got in other good two performances, so definitely not. Um, mentally, I was...this is the best I've ever been you know, for a competition, so I was real happy with it there.
Reporter: What was your favorite race?
Apolo: Uh...I think the 1000 and 15, for sure.
Reporter: That's two races.
Apolo: I think...yeah, I think the 1000 and 15. *laughs*
Reporter: Why?
Apolo: Just the 1000, I mean...you know, I was going into that last corner, I could feel the win, you know. I could feel it. I was getting ready to come out of the corner nice and tight...and *claps hands* I got clipped. *laughs* You know. And I'm like "oh what's going on" and I'm running around and I just try to get up as fast as I can and just throw my body over the line and I got a silver and uh, I was happy, you know, with how fast I got to react and just snapped out of it.
Reporter: When you got the gold, was there any doubt in your mind that if he would be taken down and you would be award that medal? (I know this line makes no sense, but that's what I think he said)
Apolo: Well actually, right when I crossed the line, I was kinda wondering, you know, and I looked over at my coach and I wondered if they were going to say something because after the race, the coaches have a chance to say something about the race to the referee's, and actually they didn't even come up to my coach. They, you know, saw the call earlier.
Reporter: Oh, okay.
Apolo: And then boom, immediately just together and you know, started discussing the call. And uh, as soon as I saw them come together, I was kinda thinking you know, "well maybe there is going to be a disqualification," and I wasn't sure, but you know, I was just kinda waiting it out. Either way I was gonna be happy, you know, I mean, two silvers would be just incredible also for me.
Reporter: If there's one instant you could hold forever, one moment, which one is it?
Apolo: I think when...they announced my name in the 1500 and uh, the crowd just started standing up and cheering, and I couldn't even hear myself breath, you know, that was incredible. That's definitely something I'll hold forever.
Reporter: Are you a heart throb?
Apolo: *laughing* I have no idea!
Reporter: What do you mean you have no idea?
Apolo: I see people wearing a soul patch now, and that's great, but you know, I'm just here to do my job, you know, and just skate. *laughs*
Reporter: What do you do over the next for years? How do you do to maintain the momentum that came in two weeks for four years, for you, and for your sport?
Apolo: That's something that I'm gonna have to definitely, you know, face, is how I'm gonna be able to keep rising to an other level in short track. Um, it's definitely going to be hard and I'm definitely going to take a little break, you know, for a little bit. But uh, hopefully I can come back even stronger, you know, and just start competing and be more focused then ever.
