Kube: We’ve got Apolo Anton Ohno on the phone with us. Youv’e got to be getting really hot chicks now that your’e a gold medalist right?
Apolo: (laughs) oh my I’ve been so busy I haven’t really got a chance you know. (laughs)
K: So, like, women are calling me left and right. Do you have a girlfriend or no?
A: No I don’t have a – no it’s just so hard you know keeping a steady relationship with definitely being an Olympic athelete you know, training all the time, it’s really really hard on you
K: What kind of music are you into? Cuz a lot of people you know are kinda askin like you know when your’e training and getting in shape and working on your physical being, what kind of music are you into?
A: Depends! Depends, you know, what kinda mood I’m in. If I’m in a gym...it all depends. Majority I listen to you know R& B and hip hop.
K: What about offtime for you I mean man what do you do? Can you hang, can you go to movies, can you get something to eat?
A: Lately, yeah I can’t do anything, I can’t even get some food.
K: So what do you do, when you want to go out and eat, how do you do it?
A: You have to send somebody man. (laughter)
K: You can’t even go out, you can’t go to McDonalds can you?
A: No. Well sometimes I can go through the drive-thru, you know, they're not gonna do nothing there, but like when I’m in Salt Lake I couldn’t go down the street like, it would take me like two hours to get a burger or something you know.
K: Alright hang on here Apolo. We actually have a woman on the phone here: Pam, from Auburn? You got a question go ahead.
Pam: Yeah I’d like to know, since the Olympics are over, how much more training do you do after the Olympics? Or every day or like...
K: Ok, Apolo?
A: Well right now I’m not doing anything, which is kinda bad, but you know that’s ok. Umm... but before you know it would range anywhere from like 4, to 6 and sometimes 8 and that’s just pure training, you know, physical work.
K: Sheez, ok cool... (goes to music)
K: The man who, gives us that refreshing reminder of why we love the Olympics and the sport speedskating, Apolo Anton Ohno, our backyard buddy. Now wait a minute, Apolo, now where do you hide your medals?
A: Oh they’re hidden right now...
K: Are they? (laughter)
K: You need a vacation, and you deserve a vacation man
A: Well, ever since the games I haven’t really gotten the chance to sit down and relax at all. You know, I mean, being home I was hoping I could just see some old friends and stuff, but I hardly even get the chance to pick up the phone you know, I’m just movin the whole time.
K: Right. What about, anybody you wanna give a shout-out to that might be listening?
A: Oh, wow. (laughing) All my friends that I used to kick it with back in the day. Everybody knows who they are. All my friends, I miss them, I wish they could get in touch.
K: Alright, well let’s switch to music. What was the last hip hop cd you actually bought?
A: Um...actually I just bought that new Nas cd not too long ago.
K: Oooh one mic? You like that track?
A: Yeah I like that
K: Stillmatic – now that is a hot album.
A: Back in the day I was mostly like west coast though.
K: We need to let you do the Takeover man. Your’e gonna do the takeover, 5:30, it’s all yours man.
NOTE: the Takeover is something the station does where a caller “takes over” the station and basically chooses three songs they want to here. And now back to Apolo:
A: Oh wow
(check traffic, more music)
K: ...and on the other line, our man, Apolo Ohno, wait a minute you gotta tell us about your dad is he lovin your new stardom?
A: My dad?? Oh, my dad. He’s doin good, he’s crazy you know (laughs).
K: Is he like you?
A: No! He’s, he’s crazy I’m sure he loves it though he’s havin a good time.
K: Do people like stop him on the street-
A: He said, he said he gets a lot of recognition you know? A lot of people see him and they recognize him and stuff though...
K: I can’t, I mean, this other question I have, this goatee thing goin on. Obviously, this thing’s takin off. Are you getting- I saw you with governer Gary Locke on the news, and he’s wearin a goatee!
A: (laughing during this last part) I know...
K: Are you thinking – hey, dude! Get a life!?
A: (still laughing) It’s crazy, I dunno, I wasn’t expecting any of that, um, actually a lot of people saw it before, I didn’t, when I was at the games, you know, so when I saw it I was like (laughing now) what the hell is that? Like dirt or something you know? Like markers.
K: (been laughing with Apolo)
A: And theres like all these people, and I was like oh my god...(laughing)
K: Are you like, get your own style, please!
A: Um it’s crazy you know. It’s definitely crazy...
(little more talking about what music is next, then music)

K: We got Apolo Ohno on the line, lets get to him and talk about, like how young people coming up in the skating world, learn how to be like you, become a speedskater?
A: Aw theres a whole bunch of websites about where they learn about where they can skate, usspeedskating.com, speedskating.com, definitely those can give you a lot of information. I just hope everyone likes it you know
K: How bout for the 2006 Olympics in Italy? You gonna be back?
A: I don’t know. That’s a long time, that’s four years you know
K: That is a long time (laughs). Do you have any idea if your’e gonna be competing in that?
A: Yeah, I’m lookin at it you know. I mean, I’m only 19 years old, so I still got a long way before, you know, before my peak is even reached you know, but, hopefully if my body stays healthy, and uh, I can keep a good head on my shoulders I’ll be good.
K: I got one more question here I gotta hit you with. There’s this girl that’s been calling me that wants you to take her to Tolo.
A: Tolo? (laughs)
K: I said he might be a little busy, but she goes to Sammamish in Bellevue, and she’s like "No no no no he knows me he knows me, he’s gotta take me to Tolo!"
A: I know her?
K: Or maybe I read this wrong. Maybe she just wants to get to know you.
A: I don’t think so... (laugh) I might, I don’t know
