Total Request Live... February 28, 2002

Carson: Hey, let me bring out my guest who kept incredible composure during the second most controversial decision during the Olympics. He's got a gold medal in one hand and a silver medal in the other, and singlehandedly instigated a soul patch revival. Please welcome APOLO ANTON OHNO to TRL.
["We Are the Champions" plays; audience applauds]
Carson: How are you, Apolo?
Apolo: I'm good, I'm good. I'm real good.
Carson: Are you just going nuts, like... cuz one minute you're just competing and there's cameras everywhere. You come to New York and they just throw you on every show, and I've seen more Olympians just everywhere.
Apolo: Well, you know, right after the Olympics, I  thought I was just going to drive home with my assistant coach and just kinda chill out, just kinda go home, but...
Carson: Yeah...
Apolo: But my agent's like, "Well, you probably won't be home 'til next Saturday." I've been running around everywhere. It's fun, definitely.
Carson: Good, well, I'm glad to have you on this particular show. Umm, not that you can, but just for us knuckle-heads out here in the world, can you just sorta, and you know, this is not a news channel here or anything. We don't care, but in your own terms, this whole Olympic experience - being in Salt Lake, despite what happened in the competitions, we'll talk about that later, what was this Olympic experience like?
Apolo: Umm, it's...
Carson: Stressful?
Apolo: No, it's not stressful. More of like an opportunity, you know. You get to perform in front of so many thousands of people screaming for you just because you're competing for the US.
Carson: But you compete in other events. How is the Olympics different? Or is it just the fact that it's the Olympics?
Apolo: It's just like, you know. It's just a big thing you know. It's every four years... something that everybody in sports is pretty much shooting for. And umm, you know especially with what happened on 9/11, umm, people who, you know, people who don't really know short track definitely watched it to support the American athletes.
Carson: Alright, tell me the difference between short track speed skating and just speed skating.
Apolo: Uhh, long track speed skating is what you usually see in the long... you know, it's in the form of an oval.
Carson: Right.
Apolo: It's just two people side by side. Short track...
Carson: You're just down here all the time [Carson crouches down in a short track-type pose]
Apolo: Yeah, you just kinda...
Carson: It's like an egg on ice. [everyone laughs]
Apolo: no
Carson: no, is it something like that?
Apolo: It's like a, you know, it's like in a hockey rink and uhh four other skaters in there and you race against other people. It's kinda like NASCAR with uhh four other cars.
Carson: Let's talk about, and we have some footage here. Both of your races that resulted in medals were a bit unconventional. Or is it non-conventional? WHO CARES [Someone from the audiendce says "unconventional"]
Carson: What'd you say? UN? Oh, you're such a teacher [he says jokingly]
[everyone laughs]
Carson: Umm , alright Apolo, walk me through this now. This is the 1000 meter short track where you won the silver. What caused this pile up we just saw?
Apolo: Umm. Pretty much, well they're not showing it now, but in the last corner, I was in front. I thought you know I was going to win. I could feel it in my hands. But I got clipped coming in that last corner. And then it was just kinda that big pile up.
Carson: I mean, this isn't hockey. They're not allowed to clip you right?
Apolo: No, no. I mean, it's supposed to be a non-contact sport you know, but obviously...
Carson: But this is close corners. Does this happen often where when one person goes down, everyone goes down?
Apolo: No, not like this, but definitely in the Olympics, it's crazy.
Carson: Right. And then we have the 1500 meter. And this is where you came in second, but ended up winning the gold. We're seeing it here, actually. This is the South Korean guy uhh, who just pulled some sort of antic. [everyone laughs] What the hell was he doing? What was his deal?
Apolo: There's, there's definitely certain rules in Olympic short track. Umm, on that one, if I'm passing another skater on the inside. Like, if he's here [jumps to one side] and I'm here [jumps back] and you know, I'm accelerating to go past him...
Carson: You gotta stay in your lane right? Like if I'm you and I'm going this way...
Apolo: It's a fine line...
Carson: You know, you can't come in my space you know what I'm saying?! He's gotta stay in the South Korean LANE. And I'm in the US LANE. [emphasis on both 'lanes']
Apolo: Kinda, kinda...
Carson: And it's like, you know, it can be a little "Hey bro, what's up" you know but it can't be like. If he crosses you, you can get disqualified for that...
Apolo: Right, it's called cross-tracking, or impeding...
Carson: That's the way it should be damnit!... U-S-A. Umm, well, jeez man, let me see these medals. These things like... what if you melted these things down. Like, how much would you get? I mean, aren't these like real gold and silver?
Apolo: Like a big fat chain, you know...
Carson: I mean, that's how man. You should make some cool fronts and gold teeth. Cash money it out. Where do you keep these? Like in a safe, or your parents have them?
Apolo: Right now, I'm just carrying them around.
Carson: Let me tell you something, bro. I know you're running around doing press, but this is Times Square in New York City dude, you better keep that under lock and key.
Apolo: I know ,am, I might get...[motions like he's elbowing someone]
Carson: You will get jacked for that immediately!!   Sit tight, we have to take a quick break. More of Apolo Anton Ohno right after this... we've got information on Josh Hartnett and his sex life... I'm gonna talk about the clip of the week...
[cut to commercial]
BACK FROM COMMERCIAL
Carson: Now, tell me about these medals. Like those things - here's my opinion. Like, if you're cruising around New York and you just got back from Salt Lake with medals, you should be able to go to like a movie theater or something, and not pay for anything, for drinks. I think, like, all the firemen and Olympic medal winners should get everything free for a month. Can you...
Apolo: Uhh, in Salt Lake it was like that. I couldn't pay for anything. I couldn't even walk down the street you know. But you know, it's different you know. Definitely.
Carson: Alright, very good. Umm, tell me about your name - Apolo.
Apolo: Uhh, my father gave it to me. It's from Greek origin. A-P means like "to lead" and then L-O means like "away" And umm, O connects it, which means like "to lead away from" pretty much.
Carson: Uhh, I heard you used to break dance. Is that true?
Apolo: When I was young, yeah.
Carson: Yeah?
Apolo: Yeah, when I was younger.
Carson: Can I hold those medals? Damn, dude, these things are heavy.
Apolo: Yeah.
Carson: Umm, do you wanna break dance for us just a little bit? [Audience cheers]
Apolo: Do I WANT to?
Carson: Just a little bit. Can we get a little music?
Apolo: Where? Right here? [Apolo points to an empty section of the stage]
Carson: Wherever you want, dude.
[music starts playing and Apolo starts break dancing]
Carson: Olympic gold medalist.. silver medalist...Apolo Anton Ohno... throwing down. Break dance alright.....He ain't messing around... WHAT?!?!?!?...
[Apolo stops dancing and stands up]
Carson: Dude, you should get a medal for that. A multi-talented young man. Best of luck to you brother. Thank you for stopping by.
Apolo: Thank you very much.
Carson: Congratulations. Great job. Alright. Who knew? Here's Shakira "Underneath Your Clothes" video seven on TRL. Thanks to Apolo.
